Font Daddy has a world of free typefaces

4/01/2015

When I open the font-picker in Microsoft Word, I get a list of dozens of typefaces from old reliables like Ariel and Helvetica to oddballs like Showcard Gothic and Heavy Heap.

You'd think that would be enough for every occasion, but there are times when a special or unusual font could add some zing to a letter or document. That's when I would turn to Font Daddy, an online repository for thousands of fonts that can be downloaded and installed for free.

The site is owned and operated by Gunnar Andreassen, an entrepreneur living in Norway who has a a passion for web design. The fonts on Font Daddy are uploaded by typographers, designers and graphic artists who appreciate the beauty of a well-designed graphic alphabet.

The fonts are collected under categories such as Celtic, Calligraphy, Minimalist, Horror and SciFi, like the !Y2KBUG font shown here.

When you browse the collection, you can view the full character map, see star ratings entered by users and find other fonts from the same creator.

Take a stroll through a world of fonts at the Font Daddy website and follow Gunnar @FontDaddy on Twitter.
