VinDecoderz has a free VIN code lookup

6/04/2015

When I buy my Tesla, which is a good four or five years away, VinDecoderz is going to come in handy. I’ll be able to enter the VIN number to learn when and where the car was manufactured and perhaps other details about its history.

A VIN, or vehicle identification number, has a specific format that contains information about that specific vehicle. VIN numbers are recognized anywhere in the world and used to track cars that may be stolen, damaged or rebuilt.

At the VinDecoderz website, you can enter a number for more than 80 different vehicle brands, from Acura to Volkswagen with a lot of unusual names in between. Names like Geely, Lada, Lancia, Scania and Great Wall. I wonder where people drive Seats or Tatas?

There is no cost to search a number but once you get the basic details, the site offers links to pay for more information such as title and accident reports.
