CES 2016: LG's robot vacuum uses augmented reailty

12/20/2015

The 2016 CES trade show is expected to be loaded with new smart devices for home cleaning and management. A good example is a new robotic vacuum cleaner that LG announced this weekend.

The HOM-BOT Turbo+ uses a video camera and a smartphone connection to apply what LG calls augmented reality technology to floor cleaning. Users can designate areas that need extra cleaning by tapping on the part of the room in the image that needs extra attention. The HOM-BOT Turbo+ will go to that exact location and begin cleaning.

The camera also enables other smart features such as Home-View and Home-Guard. The Home-View feature transmits a real-time feed to owners' smartphones so they can micromanage their home cleaning chore by remote. The Home-Guard feature turns the vacuum into a home security device by sending photos from inside the home to a paired smartphone when the device senses movement.
