iOS app brings encryption to documents stored in the cloud

8/24/2015

It’s getting more convenient to keep personal data stored in a cloud-based services. But what about security. When you hear almost daily reports of stolen data, it makes you wonder about the safety of your important information.

The solution offered by an app called LockBoxDSB is to secure individual files using strong encryption techniques. Files dropped in a LockBoxDSB folder are secured using RSA and AES 256-bit encryption.

Each file gets its own key and each key can be used only after the owner has scanned one of their registered fingerprints using Apple's Touch ID technology. Touch ID is built into the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone Plus.

The LockBoxDSB system allows you to keep sensitive documents, passwords or account numbers stored in the cloud. It can also help users recover data if an iPhone gets lost, stolen, or destroyed. Using Apple's Find My iPhone service, you can erase the phone’s data, then use LockBoxDSB’s recovery process to securely recover your stored documents.

The LockBoxDSB app is available in the iTunes App Store. Subscriptions start at $4.99 a year.
